Specialized Electrolytic Copper for Engineering Uses

PPI Aerospace offers industrial copper plating service for your specialized copper plating needs. Our recent expansion in copper plating includes four 1,500 gallon tanks plus a white layer removal process.

High alkaline cyanide copper plating baths at PPI Aerospace provide great throwing power for complex, intricate geometrics and can be used in the following applications.  All copper processes are cyanide electroplating.  We do not do decorative acid copper.

 

Applications:
•Provide an under layer for other coatings, where it improves the adhesion of the final deposit and the corrosion resistance of the overall coating.
•Provide an anti-galling surface treatment
•Provide a solderable surface treatment.
•Provide a heat treatment stop-off for masking before carburizing, shielding for brazing or nitriding.
•Provide electrical conductivity

Copper plating can be matte finish (dull), or a very shiny finish.

Heat Treat Stop-off
Steel parts to be heat treated are sometimes copper plated to allow for subsequent “selective” heat treating. After plating (and before heat treating), one or more areas of these parts may be machined to remove the copper plating. During heat treating, the areas of the part without copper will be heat treated while the areas with sufficient copper plating will not be heat treated and will remain more ductile.
After the heat treatment process is completed, it is then quite common for any remaining copper plating to be removed (by stripping) from the steel parts.

White Layer Removal
The surface of nitrided parts will contain a layer of iron nitride which is referred to as the “white layer”.  The white layer is hard and brittle and may cause an otherwise good part to fail.  For many applications it must be carefully removed.  PPI Aerospace offers the service of white layer removal.
